After ratification of the Interim Agreement on International Civil Aviation by 26 States, the Interim International Civil Aviation Organization (PICAO) came into existence on 6 June 1945 and would last until the Convention on International Civil Aviation came into force, and it is this is one of the reasons why the first year is 1945, without neglecting the key fact that it was in 1945 that the 2nd World War ended.
There has been an upward trend since 1945, which in 1973 suffered a slight regression (in terms of flights) due to the world oil crisis.
It is clearly noted the fact that the percentage of world domestic air traffic has always been (and continues to be) higher than that of international air traffic.
There was a decline of flights in the percentage of -49% in the year 2021 compared to 2019 and -60% in the year 2020 compared to 2019.
It is also observable the impact that wars, financial events and world outbreaks have had on aviation:
The Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), the Gulf War (1990-1991), the Asian Financial Crisis (1997-1999), the 9/11 attacks, the SARS epidemic (2002-2004) and the 2007-2008 Financial Crisis were negative externalities for aviation.
Finally, the clearest element of the graph is the amount of impact that the Covid pandemic has caused: a worldwide reduction in flights in a scale never seen before, and also, the subsequent rise in flights (represented by the reddish dashed line), representative of the recovery phase.
