ANGOAVIAÇÃO STATISTICS: The Annual Evolution of the Busiest Airports in Africa [1995 – 2022]

Johannesburg’s Airport, Oliver Tambo recorded the highest passenger movement since 2010 (the year it opened, and also the year the Football World Cup was held in South Africa) until 2019 (due to the impact of the pandemic) , the year in which Cairo airport lost “hegemony”.

It should be noted that from the end of 2010 onwards, Cairo airport recorded a sharp decline in passenger traffic. This, due to the protest demonstrations (of the Arab Spring) that started in Egypt in December of that year and ended in December 2012.

However, the most notable fact in the chart is the reduction in “free fall” that the 10 Busiest Airports in Africa have recorded since 2019. Johannesburg’s Airport, Oliver Tambo, which at the beginning of 2019 (pre-pandemic) recorded movements of 30 million passengers, in 2020, suffered a sharp reduction, reaching 7 million passengers.

It is also noted that Egypt (Cairo airport) is the African country that has recovered the fastest in this “Post-Pandemic” period, having achieved higher passenger movements than in the pre-pandemic period, since 2021.
