Cape Verde: Passenger movement increased by 55% in January

According to statistics from the Civil Aviation Agency (AAC), which regulates the sector in Cape Verde, the four international airports and the three aerodromes in the archipelago registered a total movement of 229,791 passengers in January, an increase compared to the 148,709 (+54 .5%) in the same month of 2021, but also compared to the 225,108 of last December (+2.1%), the previous month.

According to the same data, most passengers in the first month of 2023 were booked on international flights (183,580), and the rest on domestic connections.

Also in January, the airports and airfields of the archipelago registered a movement of 2,412 aircraft, on national and international flights, an increase of 27.1% compared to the same month of 2022.

The total movement of passengers at airports and airfields in Cape Verde has been growing strongly in the last year, accompanying the recovery in tourist demand and in August reached 225,998 passengers, a record since the beginning of Covid-19, surpassed now, last January (229,791), approaching the pre-pandemic record. In January 2020, before the effects of the pandemic on national and international connections, Cape Verde airports handled 258,357 passengers.

On July 18, the Cape Verdean government signed a concession contract for the public airport service to the Vinci group, involving the management of four international airports and three aerodromes for 40 years, receiving 80 million euros in revenue.

The new company that will manage Cape Verde’s airports is 70% owned by Vinci Airports and 30% owned by the Portuguese company ANA (wholly owned by Vinci since 2013).

Cape Verde airports handled more than 2.1 million passengers in 2022, almost triple compared to the previous year, according to AAC data previously reported by Lusa.

In 2022, the four international airports and three airfields of the archipelago registered a total movement of 2,177,611 passengers on domestic and foreign flights, an increase of 162% compared to the 830,240 in 2021.

Also according to AAC data, Cape Verdean airports and airfields totaled 25,400 aircraft movements, compared to 14,284 in 2021.

Despite strong growth in 2022, airport traffic in Cape Verde remained well below pre-Covid-19 pandemic figures. In 2019, the year in which the archipelago broke the tourist record, with more than 819,000, this movement was 2,771,931 passengers and 35,202 aircraft.
